Offering to the dead

Scope and Content

B&W photographic print. 'Offering to the dead: To celebrate the New Year and the final departure of the spirits of the dead, a tall pole is set up out side the Deka Chang (bachelor's dormitory). From its four crosspieces hang hoops made of wood and sword beans, representing spindles, and small bows with cotton seeding rollers tied to them. N.B. This photograph is named "Hokai" but this may be incorrect, as the relevant description in the Tour Diary refers to Thangpui, visited on 1928 January 23.'
