Covers a brief history of the treatment of mental illness from the Romans to the age of the French Revolution, to the building of asylums in the nineteenth century. Rodger also discusses the management of these mental hospitals and trends in modern treatments such as continuous narcosis, cardiazol shock therapy, insulin therapy, and electroconvulsive treatment (ECT).
