Covers the West of Scotland's contribution to the advance of psychiatry in the 19th century, the origin of mental hospitals, Royal Asylums and County Asylums, and the changes Rodger had seen in his own lifetime such as the development of new treatments and drugs (such as tranquilizers and anti-depressants) and the end of the use of padded cells and strait jackets.
