Minute books of the Cambridge Garrick Club.

MS.Add.5048: Minutes, 13 July 1833 - 12 July 1836, 124 folios.

On fo. 1v is a note on the hiring by the club of the Barnwell Theatre, 1835-1838. Attached to fo. 24 is a letter from W.H. Smith to Miss [ ] Turtle, 7 January 1834. On fo. 124 is a list of names and addresses, and on fo. 124v is a list of plays. Fos 80-123 are blank.

Attached to fo. 1v is a list of the committee to 25 March 1839. On fos 2v-32 is a list of performances, 8 January 1834 - 29 December 1842. Copies of the following letters occur: Henry Rance to W.C. Macready, 6 October 1836 (fo. 32); William Charles Macready to Henry Rance, October 1836 (fo. 33); J. Dimmock to [ ], 12 January 1838 (fo. 114v); J. Bowtell to the Committee of the Garrick Club, 5 February 1838 [not '1837'] (fo. 120); James Martin to the Garrick Club, 12 November 1838 (fo. 167); W.H. Smith to the editor of the Bury post, 29 November 1838 (fo. 170v); W.H. Smith to the Garrick Club, 21 November 1838 (fo. 171v). The versos are mostly blank.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Cambridge Garrick Club was founded in 1833 by former members of the Cambridge drama society 'The Shakespeare Club', run by W.H. Smith. The Cambridge Garrick Club gave performances of plays in Cambridge and nearby towns. Its first president was John Richard Barker Esq.
