Administrative / Biographical History
The Association was founded by a number of young Salford men who, in 1891, in the absence of free technical education, prevailed upon a local science teacher, John Morris, to teach them science in his spare time. Mr Morris readily agreed, and from this liaison the Salford Science Students' Association was formed. When Salford Royal Technical Institute opened, John Morris was appointed head of the department of mechanical engineering, and the Association held its meetings in the building until 1966. By 1909 the Association had extended its scope and included graduates and professional engineers among its members. It was therefore felt appropriate to change the title to the Salford Technical and Engineering Association.
