H. Grindell Matthews was an inventor whose more famous inventions include the radio telephone, talking pictures and the death ray, which was pioneered in the 1920s and, following a certain amount of indifference from the British government, was subsequently sold to America. He also assisted with early television experiments. Grindell Matthews lived at Mynydd-y-Gwair, Llangyfelach. He married twice, to a former opera singer, Mrs Olive Waite, and to Madam Ganna Walska, from Poland.
