Letters to Joan Welland (née Patterson)

Scope and Content

This series contains over a thousand letters, telegrams and cards sent to JW (née Patterson) by DW - both before and after their marriage. The majority of these date from the wartime period, when DW was serving in the Royal Artillery and was posted to a series of different locations. The post-war letters were largely sent when he was away on research-related visits, and contain some references to his work on WO; these later letters also often include notes to his young son Michael. There is also a small number of letters to JW from other family members, such as her parents, as well as some papers relating to her graduation and her first appointment as a teacher in Nottingham in 1940.
