Whilst the vast majority of DW's papers relate to his work on WO, there is a small quantity of material relating to his other interests and spheres of activity. This includes some papers relating to his work in the field of American Studies, notably the typescript of a lecture in which he traced the history of American Studies at the University of Manchester during 1948-1988, a period in which he himself had played a prominent role in the discipline. It also includes some other more general material, most significant of which is the manuscript of the first, unpublished, novel by Stanley Middleton. Middleton was born in 1919, and educated at University College Nottingham, which is where he and DW came into contact. He began writing whilst at University, so this manuscript may represent some of that earliest work; his first published novel, A short answer, appeared in 1958, and since then he has published over forty novels. The papers also include a series of greeting cards sent to DW by Vivian and Irène de Sola Pinto during the 1960s. These are all limited edition printed cards, containing poems by Pinto.
