Administrative / Biographical History

The correspondence relates to the British Naval Exploring Expedition, 1824 (leader George Lyon), sent by the Admiralty to cross Melville Peninsula and explore the most easterly point of mainland America reached by the British Naval Exploring Expedition, 1819-1822 (leader John Franklin). Setting out in MS Griper the expedition landed on Coats Island, northern Hudson Bay and reported on the Eskimos whom they met there. In Roes Welcome Sound, they were twice nearly shipwrecked and were forced to turn home before reaching Repulse Bay.

The letter was written in the expedition ship HMS Gripper
