The site was excavated between 1888-1902 by the Deutsche Orient-Gesellschaft. The excavations discovered a highly fortified fortress, giant statutes of lions, and large stone inscriptions, mainly in Aramaic and Phoenician. Most of the finds are now held in the Istanbul Archaeology Museum and Pergamon Museum in Berlin.
