File: MTRL Interferometer

Scope and Content

The file includes correspondence and papers from the beginnings of the project in 1974. These include internal university correspondence, communications with the SRC and project committee minutes (most of the file relates to the funding and siting of the new telescope at Knockin).

Administrative / Biographical History

The Multi-telescope radio-linked interferometer (MTLRI) project was launched following the failure of the Mark V telescope. The interferometer used the Mark IA and II telescopes and the Defford dish in Worcestershire and the Knockin dish in Shropshire (other telescopes were added later at Darnhall and Pickmere-Tabley). The Knockin telescope was built for the project and used a "production-line" telescope built by E Systems, Texas. The project was supported by the Science Research Council.
