Additional manuscript material

Scope and Content

Shaw sent Schmidt various poems for his comment and consideration during 1974-1976 (as documented in his correspondence file at CPA/2/1/65). Many of these went on to be published by Carcanet in Comforting the wilderness (1978), for which there is not a separate book file in the first accession of papers. The typescript and photocopy typescript material listed here was included in the Curious questions book file, stored alongside the manuscript of that pamphlet. It includes numerous poems by Shaw, 18 of which were later published in Comforting the wildernessA number of the poems are unattributed but are presumably by Shaw. Also included are some photocopies of poems by two other American writers, taken from publications and stored with the Shaw material.
