Manuscript

Scope and Content

Manuscript of the collection, in the form of ribbon and carbon typescript, which is complete (including preliminaries added by Carcanet), with the addition of an extra epigraph for the 'Twelve Years' sequence of poems which was not ultimately included in the publication. The manuscript has been marked up with printing instructions by Michael Schmidt in black ink, and further annotations added in pencil by the printers. The manuscript was stored by Carcanet with further typescript material, including unpublished poems, some of which were submitted for possible addition to the collection, and others which were probably intended to form part of a planned subsequent collection, which was not ultimately undertaken by Carcanet. Also included is one article by Newlin, and a bundle of letters from her. This further material is bundled at the end of the manuscript, and is typescript unless stated; it is as follows (with sheet numbers):

  • 49-51 Title page and two different versions of the contents of Day of sirens.
  • 52 Letter from Newlin (10 Sep 1972), sent as a covering letter for the earliest version of the collection.
  • 53 'Ripe' (poem).
  • 54-55 Letter from Newlin (9 Sep 1972), sent as a covering letter for some extra poems she wants added to the manuscript of the collection, which she lists. Only 'Black September' is included here - probably because it was rejected; the other poems listed were included in the published version.
  • 56 Another version of the contents page for the collection.
  • 57 'Writing Poems in a Field' (poem).
  • 58 'Fat' (poem).
  • 59 'Blind Man's Buff' (poem).

  • 65 Holograph postscript of a letter from Newlin.
