Galley proofs of the book, consisting of the preface, introduction and essay texts, in the form of galley slips photocopied onto large sheets. The essays by Alastair Fowler and Eric Anderson are transposed so that Anderson's appears before Fowler's. These proofs are noted as the 'marked set', and have been corrected in various hands throughout. No colour coding has been used to distinguish printing errors from other changes. There are corrections in blue and in red ink in the same two hands throughout: the blue annotations mark printer's errors, other changes, and instructions on format and layout (probably made by the copy-editor); the red annotations largely relate to technical and stylistic matters, and may be those of the proof-reader. There are also further corrections in black and red which vary and appear to represent authorial changes or errors.
