Manuscript poems

Scope and Content

A bundle of manuscript poems by Jay which were clipped together and stored with two letters from Jay to Schmidt (dated 11 and 17 Jan 1978). These do not comprise a complete manuscript of Shifting frontiers: while most of the poems here appear in the collection, seven of them do not, and there are considerably fewer poems here than were included in the publication; this material presumably reflects and earlier version of the collection. The two letters from Jay relate among other things to the submission of poems for Schmidt's consideration, and in one of the letters he encloses the typescript poem 'Reading Brecht's poems soon after my daughter's birth', which did appear in the collection. The poems are carbon and photocopy typescript, and are as follows:

  • 'First Love'
