Unmarked proofs

Scope and Content

These unmarked page proofs have been retained as they form the only document surviving from the proof stage of publication. These obviously represent the earliest stage in proofing as there are numerous errors in the text.

There are two sequences of printed page numbering in these proofs: the introduction which is in Roman numerals and the text which is in Arabic numbers. At least one of the page numbers has been printed wrongly, so the archivist has added running numbers in the top left-hand corner of each sheet.
