Contributors' proofs (incomplete)

Scope and Content

Page proofs or sections of page proofs which have been corrected by their authors, and often also initialled or signed with a note to Warner. The proofs are lacking: Donald Davie's editorial; the essays by Charles Tomlinson and Octavio Paz; the obituary of Plural; the poems by Paul Mills and Val Warner; C.H. Sisson's review of Allen Tate; and Gordon Ellis's review of the Song of Songs. Three covering letters from authors had been placed at the top of the bundle; these are from Richard Swigg, Dick Davis and David Wright. Also at the top of the bundle are: an unmarked page proof of Robert Wells's poem 'The Last Caliph'; typescript notes by Val Warner on the collated proofs; a copy letter to Charles [Sisson] from Val Warner relating to his contributions; loose slips of typescript footnotes for Dick Davis's article on Winters and Wittgenstein; and a carbon typescript of these notes in their entirety, compiled by Val Warner.

These proofs were not stored in any particular order, although (with the exception of the pieces by Robert Wells and Dick Davis) the proofs of all contributions by each writer who contributed more than one piece were bundled together. Now the proofs are arranged broadly in the order in which the pieces appeared in the publication, although the archivist has not separated bundles relating to a single author; where an author made more than one contribution their proofs are inserted at the point where the first piece appeared in the magazine. The archivist has added running numbers to each piece.
