Carcanet, Summer 1970

Scope and Content

File relating to the Summer 1970 issue of Carcanet magazine, published by Carcanet Press from Oxford. The file contains a paste-up of the magazine, in the form of typeset text (including cover design and advertisements) taped onto one side of a series of pamphlet-sized sheets which then have been taped together into folios reflecting the way in which the pamphlet would be folded and gathered. Some corrections have been made by resetting lines of type and pasting the corrected versions over the earlier text. The paste-up is stored with: various trial typeset extracts of author names and poem titles; photocopy of page 2 of the magazine with manuscript annotation; original typescript of the Chatto and Windus New Poetry advertisement (which appeared on p. 45); and an envelope sent from Michael Schmidt in Fowey, Cornwall, to Gareth Reeves at Pin Farm in Oxford, which presumably contained some of the Carcanet material. The magazine contained poems by Sally Purcell, Simon Chester, Gareth Reeves, Peter Jones, James Cole, Peter Jolliffe, Bruton Connors, Michael Cayley, Dawson Jackson, Owen Davis, Anthony Rudolf, Alan Crang Robert B. Shaw, Michael Schmidt, Li Po (transl David Erdal), Osip Mandelstam (translated by Richard McKane), Yevgeny Vinokurov (translated by Daniel Weissbort), and Apollinaire (translated by Barry Morse).
