Bundle of manuscript material

Scope and Content

A bundle of Pilinszky translations sent to Schmidt with a covering letter from John Bátki, who offers Schmidt these translations by himself and Frederic Will to add to the volume of Hughes's translations. This was Schmidt's original intention (as noted in Hughes's correspondence file at CPA/2/1/39) but ultimately the only translations included in the volume were those by Hughes and Csokits. The texts included here are in the form of ribbon, carbon and photocopy typescripts; Bátki's letter is sheet 1, and the texts (all poems unless stated, with sheet numbers supplied) are as follows:

  • 2-3 'By the Time you Come'
