Holograph and typescript poems

Scope and Content

A large bundle of holograph and typescript poems by Jennings, some of which were published in Growing-points but many of which were omitted from the collection. The poems listed on sheet numbers 8-57 were found stored inside a folder with the label of David Higham Associates, Jennings's agents. This would originally have contained a selection of typescript poems (identified in the contents list at sheets 4 to 6), from which Schmidt was asked to choose those which would make up the collection (the covering letter sent by Higham Associates is at CPA/2/1/41/5). The chosen poems were presumably extracted to form the typescript of the collection, leaving those not chosen in the folder, although these appear to have become mixed up with other loose poems at a later date. All the poems which came from the folder are ribbon or carbon typescripts, some of which include corrections in Jennings's hand. Some have numbers added in pencil (although their original order has been disturbed and does not necessarily match the numbering given on Higham's contents list), and others have small ticks in the top right-hand corner, which was Jennings's way of indicating her own preferred poems. These poems were stored alongside a large bundle of loose poems, both holograph and typescript (sheets 59 to 159). Within this loose bundle only the poems on sheet numbers 59-61, 63-64, 66, 128, 135 and 137 were actually published in Growing-points (and 'The Holy Fool' at sheet 80 subsequently appeared in Jennings's 1977 collection,Consequently I rejoice). The loose poems probably represent some of the many new poems Jennings sent to Schmidt after the main Growing-points typescript was submitted by David Higham Associates. In the list below, all Jennings's poems are typescript (either ribbon or carbon, some with annotations) except where stated otherwise. The poems and papers are as follows:
