Scope and Content

File containing the manuscript of Made in Scotland: an anthology of fourteen Scottish poets, edited by Robert Garioch (Cheadle: Carcanet press, 1974). This anthology featured work by Tom Buchan, Paul Mills, James Rankin, Margaret Reynolds, Charles Senior, Forbes Macgregor, Billy Kay, Rayne Mackinnon, Duncan Glen, Donald Campbell, Derek Bowman, Robin Fulton, Roderick Watson and Liz Lochhead. The book was copy-edited by Val Warner and printed by W. and J. Mackay. The manuscript is complete, including all preliminary pages (in typescript), all authors' contributions, and biographical notes. The contributions take a variety of forms, indicating that these are the versions supplied by the authors themselves; they include typescripts, text extracted from published sources and photocopies from publications. The manuscript has been foliated and marked up with printing instructions by Val Warner in pencil and in pink ink. Some annotations by Garioch appear in black. Further printing instructions in pencil in another hand were probably made by personnel at Mackays. James Rankin's section includes additional typescript poems on the reverse of those selected for inclusion which have been crossed through; these are 'Dinner with Miss P', 'Temple Dig', and 'Back from Jarlshof'; Duncan Glen's section also includes four additional poems from a publication which have been crossed through, called 'Roundabout', 'The Machine'; 'Scene'; and 'Classless Growths'. The manuscript itself is preceded by: a typescript list of vocabulary problems, probably compiled by Val Warner; a list in Schmidt's hand of poets and poems intended for inclusion; typescript poem 'In the Sun' by Derek Bowman, which was removed from the anthology; typescript list of contributors' addresses; list of acknowledgements; glossary (most of which was incorporated into the text as footnotes); and a list of poems by each author, not in their published order. At the end of the manuscript is an extract from the fashion section of Good Housekeeping magazine, which included quotes taken from the anthology.

Sheet numbering in the manuscript is as follows: additional initial pages numbered i-xii by the archivist; original foliation running 1-127 with extra inserted sheets 56A and 87A; and five unnumbered sheets (cutting and compliments slip) at the end.
