Scope and Content

Manuscript of the issue in the form of ribbon, carbon and photocopy typescripts submitted by contributors; in addition, Grevel Lindop's poems are proof sheets from a publication, Donald Hall's poem is extracted from the Harvard Magazine, and Timothy Dekin's poems are in the form of a pamphlet publication. Many of the pieces have been revised by their authors and a number of them are signed. Contributions from Christopher Middleton and Jenny Joseph are accompanied by covering letters. The manuscript is lacking the 'Postscript' to Michael Hamburger's essay 'A Time for Dreams'. The other contributions had been arranged in their published sequence apart from the pieces by Dekin and Richard Swigg which appear later in the manuscript than in the published version (following Alain Bosquet's poems). In the position occupied by Dekin's poems in the published magazine is a series of seven poems with no author's name attached; these are entitled 'The Long Arcade', 'The Elaboration', 'Secret Uncle', 'Tears are the Only Genuine Rain', 'Plasm Palms Psalm Lamps', 'Hydrargyrum' and 'The Classic Pose'. Most of the manuscript has been marked up for printing by Val Warner; she has also added foliation, but this does not run in sequence, as if the material was reordered from a different original arrangement.

The archivist has added running numbers at the top left of each sheet to distinguish it from the original foliation, which does not run in sequential order.
