Manuscript of the book. The selected poems from three earlier collections are photocopied from the publications, and the new poems are original typescripts which have been annotated and emended by Richards himself, using blue, black and red ink, and pencil. Of these new poems, 'Talking to Himself' is not included, and a short poem called 'Maturity' is in its place; the latter did not appear in the published version. Robert Wells has added part-titles and foliated part of the manuscript; I.A. Richards has numbered the new poems himself in red. The manuscript is stored with: a holograph letter from Richards to Schmidt (6 October 1977), in which he encloses a contents list for the 'selected' part of the volume; and Richards's annotated typescript foreword for the book. There is very minimal mark-up for printing, made in blue pencil by Schmidt.
Scope and Content
The first three sheets are unnumbered; the following foliation added by Wells runs 1-68; the archivist has continued this foliation in pencil from 69 to 101.
