Greenslade Deeds

Documents concerning some 66 places in County Durham, often represented by a single item. The places covered most extensively are Barnard Castle, Durham City, Ingleton, Ludworth, Redheugh in Gateshead and Staindrop. There are also isolated items relating to Fenham and Norham in Northumberland, and Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire. The collection is preponderantly of 17th century deeds and relates particularly to places in Teesdale, Co. Durham.

The main collection, comprising 562 items, was purchased in the 1950's (in more than one instalment from different sources) on the initiative of Professor S.L. Greenslade. Another closely associated group of 37 deeds was bought in the 1960's and has been treated as an appendix to the main collection.

The Library will assist where possible with identifying copyright owners, but responsibility for ensuring copyright clearance rests with the user of the material.

Internal evidence suggests that most, or possibly all these deeds belonged earlier this century to a larger collection subsequently broken up, parts of which passed through the firms of H.R. Moulton and of R.B. Halliday of Leicester.
