A court of record was granted to the borough by the charter of 1662 (see BD/A97 pp. 56-62). It was held fortnightly before the bailiffs, and dealt mainly with cases of debt under 40s. (and occasionally larger sums). It was abolished by the Municipal Corporations Act.
