Scope and Content

"Notes Extracted from a course of Lectures on the Practice of Physic by Dr James Gregory" 1793-1794.

Administrative / Biographical History

Dr James Gregory was born in Aberdeen in 1753, the son of John Gregory (1727-1773), professor of medicine at Edinburgh University. He was educated at Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Oxford and when his father died while James was still a student, he completed his father's course of lectures with such success that the professorship of the institutes of medicine was kept open for him. After graduating as a doctor in 1774 he continued studying medicine on the continent and took up his professorship in 1776 at the age of 23. From 1790 to his death in 1821 he was the chief of the Edinburgh Medical School and had the leading consulting practice in Scotland.
