Scope and Content

Correspondence, contracts and press cuttings relating to the works of Helen Bannerman, 1980-1984. Only two letters from 1983 and three from 1984. Correspondence includes: correspondence relating to translation and, recording rights; objections raised as to the content of Bannerman’s books; publishers' correspondence and contracts between Chatto and Windus, and Carlsen if A/S, Iđunn, Bartlett Bliss Publications, Tuttle-Mori Agency, R M Martin (of Lindsays w.s., and great-nephew of Bannerman); correspondence relating to the transfer of Chatto and Windus children’s books to The Bodley Head. Correspondents are selectively indexed and include: Margaret Clark, of The Bodley Head, Elizabeth Smith, the biographer of Bannerman, Norah Smallwood, of Chatto and Windus, Ann Matheson, of the National Library of Scotland, relating to an exhibition at that library, Robert Burchfield, on the origin of the word 'Sambo', John Charlton, of Chatto and Windus, and Messrs W H Smith.
