Correspondence and papers relating to the company Chatto, Bodley Head & Jonathan Cape Ltd (subsequently Chatto, Virago, Bodley Head & Jonathan Cape Ltd). This company was set up in 1969, initially by Chatto and Jonathan Cape alone to share sales, distribution, accounting, and later, design, production, copy-editing, rights and publicity of the companies, The Bodley Head joining in 1973 and Virago in 1986. Virago accomplished a management buy-out in Apr 1987, and the company was bought by Random House in May 1987, this bringing about the resignation of Reinhardt from the chairmanship of The Bodley Head and from the board of the combined company. A considerable amount of the correspondence relates to the sale of Granada Group and Reinhardt’s shares in the company to the combined company. Also covered is Graham C. Greene’s concern that Reinhardt might publish increasingly under his own, independent, imprint, and that both Graham Greene, the author, and Reinhardt were becoming unhappy with the position of the company.
