Steele, know as Chris, was a general practitioner in Manchester from 1970 to 2002. He spearheaded cessation treatment for smokers and ran the very successful Stop Smoking Clinic at the University Hospital of South Manchester. In 1984 he won a landmark ruling that enabled the prescription of anti-smoking gums on the NHS. Steele was a member of Manchester Medical Society and the British Medical and Dental Hypnosis Society. In 1988 Steele became 'Resident doctor' on ITV's 'This Morning' show.
