Smith, a nephew of Thomas Turner, was born on 5 May 1816 studied medicine at Manchester Royal School of Medicine where he was lecturer in anatomy and physiology from 1841. On the merger of Owens College and the Medical School, Smith was appointed to the chair of general anatomy and physiology. Smith was house surgeon at MRI for two years after qualifying, and later became honorary assistant surgeon in 1847, and surgeon in 1849. Smith was very popular, especially among his students. He died suddenly of heart disease on 10 February 1875.
