Sutherland was born in Essex on 8 May 1932. She studied medicine at Manchester and held resident appointments at MRI and Upton Hospital, Buckinghamshire. Sutherland was later senior lecturer in anatomy at the University of Manchester. She was a member of Manchester Medical Society and honorary fellow of the Society of Chiropodists.
