Southam, the son of F.A. Southam and grandson of George Southam, was born on 27 June 1888. He gained his medical education at Oxford, Manchester and St Bartholomew's. He was awarded a number of academic distinctions, and in 1926 was elected Hunterian Professor of Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons. Southam held a succession of surgical appointments at MRI, and also held surgical appointments at Salford Royal Hospital, Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, Manchester Northern Hospital, Manchester Jewish Hospital and Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport. He resigned these posts when he was appointed to the honorary staff of MRI in 1930. With S.R. Wilson, Southam was joint author of the investigation into cancer of the scrotum, which drew attention to the problem among mule-spinners and led to mule-spinners' cancer being scheduled as an occupational disease. On the advent of the NHS, Southam retired from MRI, and went to live in North Wales, where he died on 16 March 1970.
