Spurgin gained his medical education at the University of Durham and was house surgeon at the Royal Infirmary Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Darlington Hospital before being appointed anaesthetist to Christie Hospital, Manchester, and senior anaesthetist to Stockport Infirmary. Basil William Steward Spurgin, who was probably his son, studied medicine in Manchester (LMSSA Lond 1938) and was a general practitioner in Bramhall, Cheshire.
