Sutcliffe, the son of William Sutcliffe (see below), studied medicine under his father at Stalybridge, and at Manchester and Guy's Hospital, London. Sutcliffe travelled in Egypt and the continent in the late 1870s. He was house surgeon at MRI and AMO at Monsal Fever Hospital before settling in general practice in Stalybridge. In 1897 Stalybridge became AMO at Cheadle Royal Asylum, being appointed medical superintendent the following year. He was also clinical lecturer in mental diseases at the University of Manchester. Sutcliffe retired from practice in 1922. He died on 28 May 1942.
