Stewart, known as JGS, was consultant radiotherapist at Christie Hospital, Manchester. He was born at Peterhead and studied mathematics and physics at Aberdeen University. From 1941 to 1945 Stewart served as a technical officer in the RAF mainly in India, before returning to Aberdeen to study medicine. Stewart held various hospital appointments before embarking on a career as a radiotherapist. Stewart came to Christie Hospital in 1951 and eight years later was appointed consultant. He was also visiting radiotherapist to Wigan Royal Infirmary and to the Manchester and Salford Skin Hospital. Stewart specialised in head and neck cancer, and published important papers on dosage for cancer of the larynx. Stewart died suddenly on 22 March 1977 aged 56.
