Scope and Content

Constitution, annual reports, 1958-1968; committee minutes, 1942-1970; membership lists, 1958-1970, and forms for transfer of members to the British Association of Social Workers in 1970; papers relating to education and training and the development of family casework, 1955-1965, AGFC publications including AGFC/AFCW Newsletter, 1959-1970, and Social Work, 1949-1970; and evidence/memoranda submitted to enquiries, 1956-1970.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Association was established in 1940. It was known as the Association of General and Family Case Workers between 1954 and 1963 but reverted to its earlier title in 1963. In 1970 the association merged with six other social workers' organisations to form the British Association of Social Workers.

The archives of BASW's predecessors were listed before their deposit in the Centre. The published catalogue is available for purchase. The archives of the different organisations are distinguished by different initials.

Acquisition Information

The archive was transferred to the Centre by the British Association of Social Workers from the Association's headquarters, 17 July 1997.
