Scope and Content

Reports from the Organising Committee on progress of the movement in a number of areas, such as the formation of local Committees and the organisation of promotional events. The Organising Committee reported to the Executive on progress in all areas, reports also include information about membership of other Committees, notably the Ladies Committee, the Sites Committee and the Finance Committee.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Organising Committee was appointed at an Executive meeting of 13/05/1909, to organise the movement. The Organising Committee reported to the Executive on topics such as progress on the formation of Local Committees and the work of the Ladies and Sites Committees, as well as other issues faced by the movement, such as progress on the organisation of promotional events such as the Shakespeare Masque.

Original members of this committee: Lord Lytton, Mrs Alfred Lyttelton, George Bernard Shaw, William Archer and Mr Robert Donald; Harley Granville-Barker may also have been a member of this Committee, but the dates of his membership are unclear. Mr H.S. Perris was engaged as organising secretary for two years at Executive meeting of 16/07/1909. Some changes in the secretariat and organisation of the Organising Committee took place in 1910; see in particular Executive meetings of 28/04/1910 and of 05/05/1910. George Heyer was appointed as Organiser at Executive meeting of 09/06/1910.
