Scope and Content

Exclusive edition medal, commissioned to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the National Theatre and the grant by her the Queen of the title 'Royal' to the theatre on 22 October 1988. Medal designed and sculpted by Raphael D. Maklouf. Hallmarked at the London Assay Office and proof minted by the Tower Mint in London; limited edition of 500. Accompanied by case and by explanatory leaflet stored inside the case; leaflet includes introductory note signed by Lord Rayne.

Recto: embossed with exterior view of the National Theatre, and view of the city of London, including the dome of St Paul's Cathedral, across the river. National Theatre flag embossed on the left hand side of the image. 'Twenty-fifth Anniversary, 1963-1988' inscribed around the edge of the medal.

Verso: embossed with portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, patron of the National Theatre. 'H.M. Queen Elizabeth II, patron, Royal National Theatre' inscribed around the edge of the medal.
