Scope and Content

This file documents the relationship of the Joint Council with the Council of Repertory Theatres (CORT). Areas covered in the file include the invitation for Kenneth Rae to attend CORT meetings and resolution passed by CORT addressing the government in support of the National Theatre project and opposing the suggestion to use of the funds towards regional theatres instead (1953). The file also includes correspondence between Kenneth Rae and Lord Esher inviting Esher to speak about the National Theatre at a CORT luncheon (1960).

Administrative / Biographical History

Founding members of the Council of Repertory Theatres were the Colchester Repertory Company, the Dundee Repertory Theatre, Oldham Repertory Theatre Club, Oxford Repertory Players, Perth Repertory Players, Windsor Repertory Theatre and York Citizens' Theatre Trust Ltd.; additional members were a number of repertory theatres acros the United Kingdom. The Old Vic Theatre Company was a honorary member.
