Coronation Costume Ball

Scope and Content

This file documents the Coronation Costume Ball, held at the Royal Albert Hall on 13 May 1937 to raise funds for a National Theatre.

The file includes souvenir programme for the evening (2 copies), with list of names on the Ball Committee, 'Order of Procession' for the Ball, article entitled 'Building a National Theatre' by Geoffrey Whitworth, menu and wine list for the evening and programme of dance music.

The file also includes small flyer (4 copies) and playbill (5 copies) publicising the ball. Flyer and playbill give details about the setting of the ball, which will be 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', designed architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, and include information on tickets types and prices.

Programme is ca. h. cm. 26.7 and w. cm. 22.3. Front and back cover in thick cream-coloured high quality paper. Text on front cover printed in blue ink; front cover decorated with golden, green and red motive.

Flyer and playbill feature text printed in blue ink, with illuminated initial capital letter.
