Correspondence and memoranda about the tripartite agreement

Scope and Content

This file covers the process of drafting the new tripartite agreement between the Old Vic Governors, the SMNT Trustees and the Governors of the Memorial Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, following the addition of Stratford to the Joint Council in 1960. In addition to the new tripartite agreement, a short agreement is also created between the SMNT Trustees and the Old Vic Governors, over-riding the old 1946 agreement forming the original Joint Council, thus making it possible for the new tripartite association to be created.

The file includes draft copies of the tripartite agreement and a draft copy of the short agreement, as well as correspondence commenting on the above drafts and circulating these for signature.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Joint Council of the National Theatre and the Old Vic was appointed in 1946 and was composed of members of the Shakespeare Memorial National Theatre and the Old Vic. The Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in Stratford-Upon-Avon also briefly joined the Joint Council from 1960.
