British Theatre Conference

Scope and Content

This file documents the involvement of the British Theatre Conference with the Joint Council, and in particular the request by the Joint Council that the British Theatre Conference endorses the National Theatre project. Material in the file includes correspondence, announcement of the first British Theatre Conference with list of topics to be covered and a number of reports and information statements, relevant to the subject of theatre, prepared for the Conference.

The file also includes agenda with full programme for the 1947 Conference and summary of proceedings for the 1984 conference.

Administrative / Biographical History

The first British Theatre Conference took place in London in February 1948. The aim of the Conference was to provide a forum for discussion of issues affecting theatre in Britain, possibly with a view to take action at Government level if necessary. Subjects for discussion at the first conference are listed a 'The state in relation to the Theatre', 'Finance', 'Theatre buildings', 'The artist and the theatre', 'The playgoer', 'Drama in education' and 'The place of the amateur in the theatre'.
