Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The files in this series document the administration of the expeditions to Svalbard from 1949. The files cover topics such as insurance, transport and travel arrangements, survey equipment, food and expedition funding.
This series was in good order, and arranged by Brian chronologically. Therefore this system has been maintained.
As the papers have not been appraised, there may be some closures, especially in relation to correspondence
In 2014 a generous donation towards the preservation of this series of records was made by Mr Tony Henning and his daughter Christine. Tony's wife, Phoebe Henning (nee Edmiston) was significantly involved in the administration of the Svalbard Expeditions during the 1950s. In 1949 Brian Harland wrote a letter to Phoebe's father thanking him for his and Phoebe's dedication to the successful running of the expeditions (Ref. CSEC A3 pt 1b). A photograph of Phoebe is in the Archive of Dr Colin Forbes, former Curator of the Sedgwick Museum (ref. FRBS DDF 590).
