Includes Mark Hovell's first impressions of the Continent, the experiences on the train journey (including views on Anglo-German relations and of life in Manchester), his first lodgings and eventual permanent residence. Describes his landlady 's Saxon dialect and a tour of Leipzig by Professor Lamprecht's assistant Herr Schöffler, mentioning a few buildings, the Imperial Court of Justice and the Royal Court of Justice, and comparing the city to Manchester. He also describes his first meeting with Lamprecht and his daughter.
