Scope and Content

One of the few available letters with content of a personal nature between Mark Hovell and Francis Gatley. However the majority of the letter refers to a notice on 'A National Fund (to celebrate the Emperor's Jubilee)' which Hovell receives in Leipzig urging people to give more money to missions abroad. He puts a part translation in the letter and indicates what he feels are the differences between Britain and Germany in relation to missionary work in the colonies and how this possibly relates to empire, increased patriotism and trade advantages.

Dated at: Ferdinand Rhode Strasse 7, Leipzig, Germany.
