Administrative / Biographical History

On 1 July 1971 the Amalgamated Society of Woodworkers and Painters (ASWP) and the Amalgamated Union of Building Trade Workers (AUBTW) amalgamated to form the Amalgamated Society of Woodworkers, Painters and Builders (ASWPB). In December 1971 the new union changed its name to the Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians (UCATT). UCATT merged with UNITE in 2017.

Acquisition Information

The initial deposit was made by UCATT in 1974, with further deposits being made in 1975, 1980, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988 and 1989. Items with references beginning MSS.170 were deposited by the London Region of the UCATT in 1977 and 1978. Additional material was transferred from the University library in 2003/4.

The Centre also holds the records of many of UCATT's predecessors, covering all aspects of the construction industry (MSS.78). The papers of UCATT's London Region and its predecessors from the other unions are held separately (MSS.170).
