Letter: T. Michael Jones, Pistyll Rectory, Nevin to Miss Lloyd

LETTER: T. Michael Jones, Pistyll Rectory, Nevin to Miss Lloyd explaining the best way to repair the Lloyd tombs in the churchyard as they are in a bad state of repair. He writes that when he first came to the parish the church had been closed for some years. He started services there again in Welsh and English, made a path in the churchyard so people could visit it and built a bier house. The inside of the church was repaired and decorated. He used some of his own money for this work. He has since been told that the churchyard belongs to the parish council not the church but in spite of many requests to keep it in repair and tidy the council does nothing - its members being chapel people. He is reluctant to resort to law to force them to do the work because this would only increase the antagonism. Although the congregation is small the church has some benefactors and the writer lists gifts of new communion cloth, cross and candlesticks, altar cloth, hassocks, harmonium. However the furniture and utensils in the church are poor. The communion set has been lost and he only has one old silver chalice. He mentions a fund for a safe in which to keep the old church registers which he has recovered. Carngnwch church has also been reopened since his arrival in the parish. Since his arrival he has done his best to increase the number of church people, having baptised over 20, prepared 8 for confirmation and established five extra services. Col. Lloyd has allowed him to suggest church people as tenants when any of his farms fall vacant. The hay in the churchyard has been given to the farmer who usually cute it as the parish council isn't likely to do it.
