Papers of Brian Tinley Shepherd Simpson

The collection comprises his voluminous correspondence with his mother and others, as well as a wealth of material (including photographs and correspondence with the Rev. W. Awdry, author of Thomas the Tank Engine stories) relating to his passionate interest in railway transport.

Canon Brian Tinley Shepherd Simpson (1912-1997), was a priest of the Scottish Episcopal Church. He studied at St Andrews University, 1934-38 and trained at Lincoln Theological College 1938-40. He was made Deacon in 1940 and Priest in 1941, serving as Chaplain St Ninian's Cathedral, Perth 1940-45 and Priest in Charge Strathtay (with Aberfeldy) 1942-45. He had permission to officiate in Diocese of York 1945-47, and was Itinerant Priest in the diocese of Moray and priest in charge of Glenurquhart 1947-64, Chaplain Tiffield School, Northamptonshire 1964-65, then served in parishes in Northamptonshire 1965-67, Johannesburgh, South Africa 1967, Alice Springs, Australia 1968, and Caversham, New Zealand 1969. He returned to Scotland as Rector of Duror, Oban 1970-80, and was Canon of St John's Cathedral, Oban 1978-80, retiring in 1980, thereafter being Honorary Canon of Oban Cathedral until his death on 10 February 1997.

Part of the collection was given to the university by Canon Simpson in 1988 and part was bequeathed to the University by him and transferred in 1997.
