Royal Asiatic Society Lectures and Events: Minutes of Events and House Committee

Scope and Content

The signed Minutes and associated correspondence of the Meetings of the Royal Asiatic Society's Events and House Committee.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.
In 1997 it was agreed by the Council that the Events and House Group should be designated as a sub-committee entitled the Events and House Committee. It was agreed at that time that the Committee should have a budget set at the annual budget setting time and that should have a small budget for entertaining visiting lecturers. The first meeting of the Committee took place on 18 September 1997 and is still currently in existence.
