Scope and Content

The first volume was bound in the early nineteenth century and contains four previously separate volumes of registers. The title on the front cover of the register gives its covering dates incorrectly as 1562–1767. Ignoring the gaps in registration noted in the paragraph below, these cover the following periods:

Former Register 1 (1562–1695), but includes a few entries of burials for 1712

Former Register 2 (1695–1718), but begins with memoranda of burials in woollen cloth 1678–1690, of those whose names appear in the burial entries in former register 1

Former Register 3 (1718–1748/49)

Former Register 4 (1752–1768)

The first volume contains many gaps in registration. There are no baptisms entered from 1667 and 1695 and 1748/49 and 1752; no marriages entered before 1592, nor from 1661 and 1695 and 1749–1752; nor burials from 1603–1625, nor between 1749–1752.

Baptisms 1562–1667, 1685–1748/9, and 1752–1767/8

Marriages 1592–1661 and 1695–1767/8

Includes a memorandum of the appointment of George Shemild of Mexborough husbandman as the parish register 28 November 1653, folio 31v; memoranda on burials in woollen cloth September 1678 to September 1690; marriages from 1754 not entered in the style required by the Marriage Act of 1753, but see register P43/1/B/1.
